Gentlemen, start your engines!

Written by Media Manager.

The engine is now in, and it is almost time to get the motor running, and head out on the highway. Maybe Bob and his team can also look out for adventure, whatever comes their way?

The little BMG Mini is now moving along at a pretty fast pace at the moment, with all of the big jobs tackled as the refurbishment process nears its end. Last week the group behind this exciting community based project received it back after having a wonderful job done by Mortimer’s Upholstery, who completely refurbished the entire interior.

The BMG Mini is an exciting collaboration of a team of committed local retirees headed by ex mechanic Bob Croy, enthusiastic local businesses and the Bowater Motor Group, who have supplied all of the new parts needed for the project through the Parts Department of Bowater Toyota.

Bob and his team have recently spent time refitting the doors and getting all of the new rubbers and fittings around the car boot and doors. The windows are all fitted and look great. Smith and Smith Glass have fitted the front and rear screens and very generously have supplied the project with a brand new front windscreen.

The team behind the BMG Mini, affectionately self titled as the Wakefield Caffeine Crew, got the engine going last week and are very pleased to be able to say that it goes and sounds very well.

The coming together of local businesses has really helped this wonderful community project. Bob and his team are volunteers, and they are doing this out of a genuine desire to highlight a terrible disease and help give back to a community deeply affected by the ravages of cancer.

Many local businesses have rallied, and they have just registered the BMG Mini and trailer thanks to the Wakefield Medical Centre and Wakefield Pharmacy respectively.

The car and trailer are also now fully insured thanks to Stuart and Jacqui Hore at the Wakefield Four Square.

As they near the final stages the BMG Mini will go back to Tony Johnston and his team at Sun City Panel and Paint for it’s last touch up and a big polish, then it will be ready for the road and a Warrant of Fitness back at Bowater Toyota's central Nelson Service Bay.

Bob is also about to apply to Internal Affairs for a licence to run a raffle. This is not as easy as one might think but with some help from Pitt and Moore Solicitors he is sure they won’t have too much of a problem.

After much discussion the BMG Mini Project team decided  that the first prize of the BMG Mini on it’s own could be added too given the tremendous level of local business interest in the project. The community has really identified with the aims of the group and their ever growing list of sponsors, and interest is certainly high. As a result more business have expressed a desire to be involved as much as they can, and the team are pleased to announce that The Richmond House of Travel has donated a second prize of a trip for two to Sydney. A third prize has also been donated by the Awaroa Lodge, who have gifted the raffle two nights accommodation in their executive suite. Hanmer Pools have also come to the party and donated one night in a four star accommodation hotel and use of the pools and spa plus a half hour massage for two people, They call it a Pamper Pack. We call it a great range of prizes in a raffle that will hopefully generate a large cheque donation to the Cancer Society.

All in all it has been a great experience for everyone involved and we are all looking forward to the first "on the road" test drive. However at the end of the day we all need to be mindful of why all of this hard work has been put in by Bob Croy and the Wakefield Caffeine Crew, the Bowater Motor Group and all of the other sponsors. It is about raising both awareness and money for the local branch of the Cancer Society.
