Tasman vs Nelson. Head to head in the Prius Challenge. Who has the greenest mayor?

We laid down the Prius Challenge to both local mayors.
Who would be the greenest? Which one of them would be able to pull off the best Eco Score, saving both fuel and money on their trip around our Prius Challenge course?

We wanted to get the message out to as many people as possible about the benefits to breaking your old driving habits. The Prius Challenge is the perfect platform for this as it encourages you to be competitive on the one hand, and very mindful of your driving style and energy consumption on the other. The all new 2012 Toyota Prius C delivers an amazing amount of usable information to the driver as you are driving, so you can monitor your driving, fuel consumption and energy use all at the same time from easy to use information displays.

With EcoFest just around the corner we thought it would be a perfect time to get both of the Mayors in, lay down the challenge and see who is the greenest when it comes to driving efficiently.
Last week Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio came in and posted a very respectable eco score of 3.7L/100km but stormed around the course in an astonishing 14 minutes, showing one and all that you can still drive efficiently and get to the meeting on time! Click here to see his photos and read the full story. This score put Aldo 7th on the Leader Board but left the door wide open for Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne to make a real competition of it.

Nick Marer shows us 2.5L/100km fuel efficiency in the Prius C

On the very last day of the Prius Challenge Nick Marer from The Little Pig Building Co came back to Bowater Toyota claiming he could do better on his previous attempt. His previous attempt was already very good, at 3.6L/100km, but not the best we had seen, and after his challenge he was sitting 7th on the leader board.

Being a Prius owner for the last 4 years, Nick had a few tricks up his sleeve, so he called salesman Chae Baird-Booth and booked another challenge knowing that he could do better. We are all for the competitive spirit, and if someone thinks that they can do better we will support them however we can, so we went along for the drive not expecting to film what unfolded!

Is Automotive Hybrid Technology the way forward?

Oil well If you are to believe some of the media spin that gets spun, you would be thinking that cars are evil and the root of all of our collective problems here on Earth as the planet undergoes some quite significant changes.
The simple fact of the matter is though that we all need cars, more so now than ever before. We lead very busy lives and rely heavily on our cars to get it all done, and get it done without any fuss or bother.
The question is can we all do better?

The Prius Challenge asks you a simple question - can you break free from your old habits?

We have created the Prius Challenge as an inspirational event - a chance to really think about how you drive, and the impact of your driving style on the amount of fuel you use. If you care anything for greenhouse gases, CO2 emissions, peak oil or exponential fuel consumption due to the "riching" of China, then you need to start thinking, and seriously, about how you get about.

Supporting the Brook Sanctuary

The Brook Sanctuary is returning nature to the Nelson Region. They are undertaking a very ambitious and visionary project, and amongst other very important projects they are currently working on raising funds to place a 14km predator-proof fence that will create a 700ha native wildlife experience close to Nelson’s city centre.

The Bowater Motor Group are right behind them on this project, and we have injected our own support during the initial public fundraising phase of the project by enabling them to have a campaign office downtown in the heart of Nelson.
