Free Parking Tuesdays are Back this Winter

The popular winter free parking Tuesdays are back for everyone keen to hit the shops in central Nelson this winter!
For 10 weeks, from Tuesday 2nd July until Tuesday 3rd September, parking will be free in the city (normal time limits still apply). Bowater Honda are pleased to be a part of this initiative with the donation of a brand new Honda Insight Hybrid to be used as a mobile billboard letting everyone know the good news.
Uniquely Nelson and Nelson City Council launched Free Parking Tuesdays in 2011 and this is now the third year the initiative has been offered over winter. Uniquely Nelson's Manager Cathy Madigan says that it has been hugely successful, with businesses looking forward to the campaign and the benefits it brings.
Mayor Aldo Miccio says “We’ve had great feedback about Free Parking Tuesdays. It creates a buzz in the city centre on what can be a quieter day during the winter months. For the past two winters it’s been a hit with both residents and business owners so we’re pleased to be able to keep it going again in 2013.”
Cathy Madigan, Manager of Uniquely Nelson says “It’s great to have Free Parking Tuesdays back again. We know people really make the most of it and it ties in well with our main winter promotion which encourages Nelsonians to rediscover their city and experience the arts and culture, food and wine, fashion and shopping and of course, the great al fresco café scene and our gorgeous sunny winter days. We’d love to see the city busy and vibrant all year round and this helps us toward achieving that.”
This year there is the added attraction of the Free Parking Fairy.

The Free Parking Fairy (a.k.a. Jordan Brannigan, Classic Hits breakfast show host!) will be out and about every Tuesday from 2nd July and he'll be hard to miss! Think very tall, red headed bloke dressed in a fairy costume!.
Although there will be no charge at the meters, shoppers need to be aware that current time limits of 1, 2 or 3 hours (depending on where you park) still apply to discourage the parks being used for all day parking. Council’s parking wardens will still be enforcing the time limits, so people are reminded to check on the meter and parking signage to confirm how long they can stay.
Any other parking and vehicle offences (such as expired WOFs, registrations and other safety issues) will continue to be enforced.
Free Parking Tuesdays will be operating in all areas where there is paid parking in the CBD including the four parking squares.

Please note that free parking will be available in the privately owned car parks in Fashion Island off Hardy Street. It does not apply to any other privately owned or long term leased car parks.
