Daihatsu to wind down sales in NZ - questions and answers

This article has been taken directly from the Toyota NZ website, and addresses any questions that our local Daihatsu customers may have.

Toyota New Zealand announced on 8 April 2013 the decision to discontinue sales of new Daihatsu vehicles by the end of the year. To view official Media Releases, please click here. Please find some common Q&A's below.

Q. Why is Toyota not going to sell new Daihatsu vehicles in NZ anymore?
A. We have not taken this decision lightly but the reality is that we are regretfully unable to secure Daihatsu products that comply with future regulatory standards for New Zealand.

Q. Is there something wrong with the vehicles?
A.No, Daihatsu manufacture great little cars and Toyota has sold them in the New Zealand market since 2002. The vehicles are made to current production standards but unfortunately, we are unable to secure products that meet Kiwi customer needs in the future.

Q. I own a Daihatsu, so will you still look after my vehicle?
A. Yes, the decision will not disadvantage any customers who already own Daihatsu vehicles. We want to assure customers that we will honour our commitment to Daihatsu owners in New Zealand and they need not worry about ongoing support. We know many Daihatsu owners are very loyal to the brand and we thank them for that loyalty.

Q. Where do I get my parts & service going forward?
A. The Toyota dealer network will continue to supply genuine parts and provide comprehensive service support.

Q.Is my warranty still valid?
A. Yes, Toyota will honour all Daihatsu warranties and will process claims as normal.

Q. Are there any new cars left?
A. No more vehicles will be ordered from Japan, however there will be a limited number of cars available until remaining stock is sold out.

Q. Will Daihatsu come back any time in the future?
A. It is very unlikely that either Toyota or another distributor would be able to import new Daihatsu vehicles into NZ that comply with future regulatory standards.

Q. Is Toyota going to replace the range with anything else?
A. Toyota’s vehicle range has evolved considerably over the years to respond to market demands and that is likely to continue. However there are no immediate plans for a direct replacement for the Daihatsu range.

Q. Is Daihatsu still being sold overseas?
A. Daihatsu sells almost one million of its small cars each year in Asia, and in Japan it is the market leader in the sub 660cc class. Australia hasn’t sold new Daihatsu vehicles since 2006 and they are no longer available in Europe.

Q. Will used Daihatsu be brought in from Japan?
A. Toyota does not plan to import used Daihatsu vehicles, but others may wish to do so.

Q. Will dealerships be removing their signs?
A. The wind down of Daihatsu new vehicle sales will take place by the end of 2013 and signage will be removed over time as part of that process.

Q. What do I need to do?
A. Toyota will send letters to Daihatsu owners advising them of the announcement and the commitment to ongoing parts and service support..

Q. If I have more questions who do I talk to?
A. We are here to help, so please contact us or your preferred Toyota dealer.
