Drive your dream with Bowater's

Ever since our humble beginnings in downtown Nelson in 1945 the Bowater Motor Group has been very focused on community involvement. We believe that you are only ever as successful as the support that you can give back. It is with this philosophy that we continue to be as involved as we can be in the wider Nelson / Tasman community.
This section of the website houses stories, links and content from a collective of organisations and events that we are involved with or support through sponsorship or partnerships.

The menu to the right has got comprehensive articles from those events, organisations and charities that we regularly involved with, click on the menu items to read more, or scroll down this page to keep up with events as they unfold.

If you think you have an event, organisation or group that would benefit from our community interest feel free to contact us.

Z Bowater Motors is Good in the Hood again, and giving away $5,000 to the locals

good in the hood

Just like the banner says, it is time for us to be all "Good In The Hood"!

Z Bowater Motors in Motueka are giving away more money this year, $5,000 in fact, to deserving local charities. This is the second time in 12 months that we have been involved in this amazing nationwide Z initiative, and a wonderful opportunity for us all to get stuck in and give back to those that do such a great job in our local community. The best thing is that you don't really have to do anything special, just drop a token in a box on your way out of the Z Bowater Motors Service Station on High Street. Every vote counts, and all 4 charities selected will get a portion of the funding.

Over 4000 applications for the programme were received nationwide in November, and today we are very pleased to be able to publicly announce the following local charities as those successful in this summers local Motueka "Good in the Hood" funding round:

  • Motueka Riding for the Disabled
  • Whenua Iti Outdoors
  • Motueka District Toy Library
  • Victim Support Motueka

These 4 hard working local charities will be up for their share of the funding depending on the results of the voting instore at Z Bowater Motors over the month of March.
How the funding is split up depends entirely on you and your votes.

Making a silk purse and going hammer and tongs in time for Christmas

Nick Harrison at workGreat progress is being made with the The Wakefield Caffeine Crew's Relay for Life Project, the BMG Mini restoration.

Nick Harrison (left), the teams panel beater, is very busy with the daunting task of making a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Back in the 1970s there was very little rust protection, hence the inside of all the panels never saw any paint or any form of rust inhibitor. But that doesn't phase Nick, being a very experienced tradesman he is right up there for the task.

It always amazes us what a panel beater can do with a welder, hammer and dolly (and that is the steel one not a two legged one).

Bowater Motor Group through Bowater Toyota have supplied the Wakefield Restoration Team  with a number of new panels.
Recently John Bruce acquired the project another old Mini body from which the team have scavenged a number of salvageable panels that Nick will fit and weld into place, speeding up the process as replacement is often a whole lot quicker than repair.

The end to Movember '12 - how did the BMG moustaches stack up?

The Movember moustache growing experiment has ended, with those of the BMG team that participated creating some great efforts. The moustache choice has been as varied as those that have tried to grow them. The Movember opportunity to change it all up for a month has certainly been embraced by some team members, and has got us thinking already about next year.

Hats off to all of these great efforts. The slideshow below shows the moustaches at their end point on the 30th of Movember.

The feedback has been very positive, so next year we think we will do it all a little differently, and take the whole thing to the next level. We have got a great event planned, so watch this space, and remember to check back in 10.5 months time. When you say it like that it doesn't seem that far away!

The next stage of course is the return to normal, or the "killing of the moustache" as some have coined it. This leads nicely into a funny video about said "moustache murder".....

BMG Grizzlies - a wild bunch of committed players

Bowater Honda was approached by a group of Nelson College students for sponsorship of their team during the evening Tahuna Touch Competition. Always keen to support our younger generation being more active in local sport, it was easy to get the support sponsorship in place.

2012-team

The team is made up of 12 likely local lads: from left back row - 1. Ozzie Mitchell - 9. Cayden Edwards - 4. Phillippe Swart - 7. Zac Columbus - 8. Cormac Enright - 12. Jake Moore -10. Jackson Pugh - 11. Ryan Amlehn - FRONT ROW (from left) - 6. Ash Lindup - 2. Luke Smith - 3.Christian Jessop.

The boys created a team made up of a fringe group of senior first and second XV players from several local schools, calling themselves the Grizzlies. This may seem like a weird name, but according to one father of a player, this is apparently not after the popular survivalist Bear Grylls, but the hairy quadrupeds from North America to which they share a remarkable likeness and similar scent. We think that this may be stretching the truth just a little but will run with it as an explanation for now!
