Ever since our humble beginnings in downtown Nelson in 1945 the Bowater Motor Group has been very focused on community involvement. We believe that you are only ever as successful as the support that you can give back. It is with this philosophy that we continue to be as involved as we can be in the wider Nelson / Tasman community.
This section of the website houses stories, links and content from a collective of organisations and events that we are involved with or support through sponsorship or partnerships.
The menu to the right has got comprehensive articles from those events, organisations and charities that we regularly involved with, click on the menu items to read more, or scroll down this page to keep up with events as they unfold.
If you think you have an event, organisation or group that would benefit from our community interest feel free to contact us.
Team Seagate hits the wilds of Africa
Team Seagate in Africa.
Captain's Report from Nathan Fa'avae
I am writing to let you know we are about to start the Expedition Africa, 500km Adventure Race. We have had an enjoyable week adjusting to the climate, time zone and local region. It’s a lot warmer than in New Zealand and the rest has got us in a good zone for the race.
The event is also round two of the AR World Series, we won round one at the Godzone race in Kaikoura (NZ) in March this year.
This race is shaping up to be a great adventure and race. There is a full field of 40-teams representing thirteen nations. It quite possibly the most competitive field outside of the World Championships in Ecuador in November, which is our ultimate goal this year.
The event starts and finishes from Port Edward on the Wild South Coast, referred to locally as the ‘Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom’.
Our goal is to win the race. None of the teams entered have beaten us before but we won’t be complacent about that. We perceive last years winner Team Haglofs Silva as a main contender, plus Southern African teams Painted Wolf and Merrell Adventure Addicts. While there are also some other strong teams, we expect the bulk to the competition to come from these three teams.
Heather Walker. A Giant of a community Good Sort.
Bowater Toyota CEO Tony Bowater presents Heather Walker with her BMG Good Sorts Dinner Voucher at the new home of the Fico Finance Nelson Giants.
The winner of April's BMG Good Sorts, Heather Walker, is a through and through Good Sort. One of those understated individuals that is in it for all of the right reasons - to just help people. A true community minded person that really does not relish being in the spotlight for what she considers as just "doing her bit". All in all we can honestly say that she is a giant in the community.
Heather is also a giant behind the scenes of a group of athletes we have a deep connection with, another of our very own special community interests, the Fico Finance Nelson Giants. As you can see by the giant Giants poster displayed on the back of the new Bowater Toyota Parts Van the team at Bowater Toyota are also pretty passionate about the Giants.
Heather has been a Giant's volunteer for over 5 years and tirelessly works away behind the scenes. She loves the team and is a well respected part of the organisation. She is passionate about basketball and also works a lot with children and adults that have disabilities by bringing basketball into their lives. It is for this that she was nominated by a close member of the community. You can see the nomination article by clicking here.
Heather was a bit surprised to win this award, with her saying when we caught up with her "you just keep doing what you do, and you don't expect these things".
Well Heather, you ought to expect these things sometimes as one good turn deserves another as they say. The Bowater Motor Group are pleased to be able to offer up this recognition to those in our community doing good work, those that dedicate themselves to a cause without desire for praise or financial kickbacks, those people in the background like Heather.
We announce our BMG Good Sorts winner for April - Heather Walker
The nominations for BMG Good Sorts are coming in thick and fast now, with some very deserving people getting the nod from their friends or those touched by just how much of a Good Sort they are!
We are very pleased to announce April's BMG Good Sort - Heather Walker.
Here is the nomination direct from the Nelson Mail website, and what a great one it is.
We think that Heather may have an indication pretty quickly just who is behind this one!
Phill Jones hits 350.
Fico Finance Nelson Giants tallman Phill Jones with his recognition of 350 games.
Last night was a very historic night for the Fico Finance Nelson Giants. The man who most of us know as the Giants stalwart and key playmaker, Phill Jones, hit quite a remarkable milestone for any top level athlete. Phill has completed 350 games now for the Nelson Giants!
The game itself, against the Zero Fees Southland Sharks was not such a great result though, with the Fico Finance Nelson Giants shut out by a mere 9 points.
After the Fico Finance Nelson Giants had a few bad minutes, the Zero Fees Southland Sharks were able to capitalise on this turn in the game and sustained it until the end to take the win, 83-94.
Results aside, the achievement by Phill to hit 350 games is amazing, and worth a celebration in itself.
