The Nelson SPCA - caring for those with no voice
Each year the Nelson SPCA provides shelter to around 2,000 animals in need. These animals arrive at our centre for reasons including neglect, abuse, lost or stray and unwanted animals. Here at the Nelson SPCA we re-home hundreds of animals, provide educational advice on caring for animals and respond to complaints about animal cruelty and neglect.
The Nelson Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was established in 1887 and is a member society based in Bishopdale, Nelson. Thats right 1887 - no typo!!!!! This charity is completely self funded, and is the only prosecution agency that receives no government funding!
The Nelson Society has four full time and three part time staff, assisted by approximately 50 volunteers . Our complex features an adoption center and a shop which supplies a large selection animal products including: pet carriers, pet food for dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. The shop also hires out equipment such as cat traps, and pet travel or transport cages.

Have you had your cupcake today?
Today is the annual SPCA Cupcake Day. A day when all branches of the SPCA collectively make and sell cupcakes across the country.
The SPCA is entirely self funded, so days like this one are very important.
If you have missed the opportunity to buy a cupcake on the street, or at one of the stalls in the supermarkets because they sold out due to their extreme deliciousness, you can still donate to them by clicking here. You may not get a cupcake but you will most certainly get a warm feeling for helping out a charity that does great work in the community.
Cupcake Day tomorrow - save some room and coins for the SPCA
With cupcake day almost upon us, the Nelson SPCA has been busy baking up a storm at the NMIT commercial kitchens to fill those orders!
They had a great turnout by volunteers today to help bake the trays and trays of delicious cupcakes needed. You can visit their facebook page here to see how you can be involved tomorrow, or keep reading to see more of the action!
Cupcake Day - eat a cupcake and do your bit
The Nelson SPCA Cupcake Day is now just a week away. The biggest and easiest thing you can do to help the SPCA out is to just buy some cupcakes!
MMMMMmmmmm. Nomnomnom. Licoricey cupcakes.
The cupcakes will be available from Cupcake 3 stalls in Nelson and Richmond, and from stalls at New World and Countdown in Nelson. They have got some commercial sponsorship from Brumbies on Hardy Street, who have come up with some excellent cupcakes to get you all thinking!
Cupcake Day - become a cupcake baker and save the animals
Cupcake Day is coming up quickly and is set to take place next week on Monday August 27th 2012!
The official Cupcake Day Website has been launched and its time to start logging on and registering as an official Cupcake Day Cook!
Whether you are an individual, family, business, school or community group there is opportunity for everyone to be involved in this fun and tasty fundraiser for the SPCA Nation wide.
Last year the SPCA raised over $230,000 for SPCA’s across the nation. In Nelson alone the cupcake bakers managed to raise over $4,000 and this year they are hoping to reach that goal and more!
